KeWI's first charity quiz night was an exceptional success and raised a fantastic amount for our chosen charity - The Chiswick Women's Refuge. Further details to come.
Over 60 members attended our March meeting to hear Rachel Tranter speak about the scope of the Borough Arts Service, which encompasses not only the Borough Art Collection, Arts events (Twickenham Carnival, Richmond Literature Festival and ArtHouse to mention a few) and Education but also many listed buildings and sites within the Borough.
Miranda Stearn followed up with a slide show using artworks from the Borough Art Collection to illustrate and talk around various buildings – Orleans House, Garrick’s Temple at Hampton, Kilmorey Mausoleum at St Margaret’s, Sir Richard Burtons Mausoleum at Mortlake and York House – now the council offices. She also spoke about Strawberry Hill & Marble Hill House, which don’t come under the Council Arts Service but are in the Borough. She brought her talk to life with anecdotes about Jack Needham, Earl of Kilmorey, who built the mausoleum for Priscila Host his mistress (and former ward with whom he absconded when she was 15!) and tales of Nellie Ionides who gave Orleans House to the Borough of (then) Twickenham in the 1960’s and was famous for breeding standard poodles named after champagnes, using clippings from their coats to make suits for her grandson, former MP Toby Jessel.
Rachel concluded by telling us about the exciting plans for extension and improvement of facilities at Orleans House over the next two years. The Grade 1 listed Octagon will be restored to its former glory and a new two storey wing built to replace the existing single storey. There will be a new entrance and shop and an extended study room providing better access to the Borough Art Collection.
They hope that you will visit some of the borough’s treasures soon and please do join the Orleans House Gallery mailing list for regular updates on all exhibitions, events, and education activities.

The walking (hiking) group had a wonderful outing to Windsor Great Park on Saturday, completing a 5 mile walk in beautiful spring sunshine. The group is photographed in front of a magnificent magnolia tree in full bloom.
